After a long search for premium Bai Hao, we are pleased to introduce this tea, the only Oriental Beauty in our collection.
Since this tea is made of only young leaves, Bai Hao is not produced as productively as other teas. In other words, if a Bao Zhong garden produces 10kg of tea, an Oriental Beauty garden of the same size produces only 1-2kg of tea. This leads to Oriental Beauty’s high cost.
The most distinct feature of Oriental Beauty is its unique honey scent (Mi Xiang). Oriental Beauty owes this scent to a small insect called Jacobiasca formosana, which bites the tea leaves. Once bitten, the leaves secrete a hormone that releases a complex bouquet of honeyed, floral, and fruity notes. This honey scent caused by bug bites is unlike the honey scent in Chinese, South Asian, and Korean teas that are produced by other processing methods.
As soon as you open the package, you will notice the mellow sweet scent from the leaves. What a happy smell!
A white fur (Bai Hao: 白毫) is seen on the dry leaves, which is how Bai Hao got its name.
The optimal steeping temperature, in my opinion, is 60-70°C (140-158°F). Oriental Beauty is a very delicate tea, so you won’t taste the whole spectrum of flavors if you steep the tea in water that is too hot. The tea tastes the best when the color of the liquid is like the picture.
The liquid keeps me pleased with a sophisticated blend of flavors including mandarin, orange, honey, orchid, apple peel, mango, and green grape.
The first taste, middle taste, and finish are equally amazing, with great mouthfeel and warmness. I can’t pinpoint any downside of the tea.
A lot of tasters mentioned that the tea makes them feel warm and cozy even though it was steeped at a low temperature.
I even compared this Oriental Beauty with a competition tea from 2005, but this tea tasted superior to the prized tea.
The more I learn about tea, the more I desire premium luxury tea. This tea satisfied that kind of desire.
I would like to share this happiness with other tea friends!
