Hunting for High Mountain Black Tea Grown in the Perfect Environment

Jong Lim Park

The Qi Lai Shan High Mountain Black Tea was highly approved by all the tasters at Daurim.

This premium black tea is made of Qing Xin trees from Mr. Gao’s tea garden on Qi Lai Shan, which is a rising-star tea region in Taiwan near Dayuling, Hehuanshan.

The garden’s elevation is about 5,600 ft high, which is rather high for black teas. Since the garden’s territory was recently developed, the trees in it are grown from the new and vibrant energy of the soil. All the conditions of the garden were great; the gap between the daily high and low temperatures was huge, and the mountain was covered with heavy fog. These characteristics increase the probability of getting great teas.

Okay, now let’s get to the tasting!
Usually, black teas made in the summer are better in quality compared to those from other seasons, and this tea specifically is from summer 2016. It’s been aged almost two years so now is a great time to open it.

The steeped liquid is clear, and its mouthfeel is soft and smooth. However, the “high mountain” part of the tea definitely kicks in.

Just as Riyue Tan (Sun Moon Lake) Black Tea makes itself standout with its unique flavors from the cultivar, this black tea stands out in its own way with its clean, smooth flavors that come from its ideal terroir. I couldn’t even sense any over-oxidation, which is pretty common in Taiwanese black teas. The level of sweetness is just perfect, so you won’t get tired of drinking this tea all day. The more you drink, the happier your mouth and stomach will become.

The consistency of the oxidation throughout the leaves proves the great skills of Mr. Gao.

If you haven’t tried this comforting black tea from Qi Lai Shan, I would highly recommend doing so.

Cheers!

Jong Lim
