The Enduring Legacy of Korean Moon Jars (Dal Hangari)
This large porcelain jar with its voluminous and globular body truly evokes the image of a full
moon, hence its beloved name, "moon jar." These iconic Korean ceramic vessels were primarily produced from the late 17th to the early 19th century during the Joseon Dynasty
(1392–1910). They were cherished by scholars and collectors who valued their embodiment of
simplicity and elegance, aesthetics deeply aligned with Confucian philosophy, the state ideology
of the time. While their exact original functions vary, they were likely used for storing liquids or grains, as objects of aesthetic appreciation, or as beautiful flower vases.
Joseon Baekja (White Porcelain) is one of the most widely known and revered forms of Korean pottery, alongside Goryeo Cheongja (celadon porcelain) and Buncheongsagi
(powdered blueware). Baekja, celebrated for its pure and moderate beauty, was continuously produced throughout the Joseon Dynasty and profoundly reflects the thoughts and preferences of the new dynasty and its nobility.
